There is an interesting history associated with Doc Martens. The legend began in 1945, when Dr. Klaus Maertens injured his foot during a skiing accident in Munich, Germany. After this painful incident in the Bavarian Alps, Maertens used old rubber tires to construct soles that trapped air within closed compartments. These air cushioned soles were a helpful addition to footwear, making each step easier to take. After showing his prototype to his inventor friend Dr. Herbert Funck, the two of them began to develop and produce more of these fantastic shoes. They began to sell quite well throughout the rest of Germany.
By 1959, they were ready to employ a company to produce and distribute their shoes, then called Dr. Maertens. After several rejections, finally the R. Griggs Group agreed to take the challenge. Located in Wollaston, England, this company successfully engineered the world's first work boot with air conditioned soles, called the 1460. The brand name was changed to Dr. Martens to sell better in England, and before long, Doc Martens will selling everywhere else in the world also!
Today there are 70,000 possible varieties of Doc Martens, designed for all of life's various activities. The brand name has retained its reputation for quality and versatility.
