Tall in the Saddle with Riding Boots

When you are heading to the stables, one of the most important pieces of equipment that you'll need is a good pair of riding boots. The best designs offer maximum stirrup support, a cushioned sole, non-slip sole, heel support, water resistance and flexibility. Because you will want these riding boots to last a long while, they need to be sturdy and well constructed, and comfortable enough to keep your feet in tact for the next ride!

Generally, you have two basic choices when it comes to riding boots. There are full length riding boots (often called Wellingtons), and shorter riding boots that cover only the ankle (these are called jodhpur or paddock boots). The first of these offers the best protection and support, and is best during the winter. However, the leather designs are very expensive, and the higher length of these boots becomes uncomfortable during warm weather. The shorter riding boots are a more comfortable fit, and usually less expensive. Always wear half chaps or gaiters along with short riding boots, to attain full protection of your lower leg.

Decide on what material you want your riding boots to be made from. This is the largest factor in determining the cost. Leather is the most common in riding boots, usually cowhide, or you can find more exotic skins like eel, lizard, or alligator. Rubber is the least costly material.

Consider what you'll be using these boots for, also! For riding and competition, you definitely need to protect your legs. But for mucking stalls and other work around the stables, you will probably prefer a shorter, more comfortable pair of boots, to avoid blistering and other discomfort around your ankle.

There are a few decisions to make when purchasing riding boots, but it is an easy task as long as you are familiar with the intended uses of each type of riding boot. If you want a custom-made boot, then it is generally more productive to buy from a local vendor than online. However, if an existing design looks appropriate for your use, then online shopping definitely is less of a hassle. Once you find the right riding boot, you'll be better prepared to enjoy the company of your horses! Happy trails!
